| TOOTH WHITENING METHODS: |
 |
There are a lot of products and methods available for tooth bleaching. One of the most essential things to do before undergoing tooth bleaching is to identify the type and the causes of discolorations in order to make the most appropriate choosing of the product and of the timing of the treatment.
There are two different types of tooth whitening systems:
- Professional tooth whitening treatments, which have to be performed under the supervision of a dentist;
- Home-care bleaching products.

Whitening toothpastes are more harmful than commonly known, due to the high number of abrasive substances they usually contain.
Though these substances no doubt remove part of the most external stains, it has been scientifically proved that an extended and incorrect use of firmer bristled toothbrushes can severely damage tooth enamel and irritate gums. |
| |
The choice of toothpaste and toothbrush is indeed extremely important.
A valuable toothpaste must cause no damages.
Normal toothpastes commonly available in shops are "biphase" pastes or gels. Good toothpastes:
- Must not have abrasive properties which could jeopardize the integrity of enamel and of dentin;
- Must not irritate the gums;
- Must have a stable PH around 7.0.
"Self-tooth-bleaching-lovers" should be aware that with a professional bleaching treatment they can get exceptional results without putting their dental health at risk. |

There are two main active principles employed for tooth bleaching: carbamide peroxyde (consisting of hydrogen peroxyde and urea) and hydrogen peroxyde. Both of them are used, with varying percentages, for professional purposes by dentists and for home-care whitening products as well.
There is a vast array of home-care bleaching products currently available on the market (stripes, masks, vials with brush to apply the liquid onto the teeth, etc.). Taking into account the low percentages of active principles in these products, the results are obviously inferior to those obtained with a professional treatment and they take much longer. To summarise, they are probably not very convenient if adopted as principal bleaching method. Anyway, they are strongly suggested as maintenance method after a professional whitening session. Professional bleaching treatments, which have to be carried out under the supervision of a doctor, are much shorter than home care methods because of the higher percentages of active principles employed (e.g. 38% hydrogen peroxide in Professional Smiling Plus by GIDIEMMESMILE) which are activated by a special light (such as the LED light emitted by PROLIGHT MACHINE manufactured by GIDIEMMESMILE).
The results also depend on the teeth original colour and on other factors like the age of the patience, etc.
It is very important that the customer does not have erroneous expectations, since each tooth reacts differently to tooth whitening (exactly as it happens with tan: each one gets his own skin darkening). |
